Today is the 30th 25th anniversary of the compact disc. Fun facts about CDs:

  1. The first CD released was The Visitors by Abba
  2. Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits was a big popularizer of the CD
  3. The first CD I heard was a Greatest Hits compilation by Supertramp at my friend’s house – I was amazed at the new technology.
  4. One of my favorite pedantically pluralized abbreviations is “CDs-ROM”, which my friend Robin coined a few years ago.

  1. Robin says:

It’s like “courts martial” and “mothers in law”.

The CD is 25, and its greatest consumer is 50 on Saturday….

  2. Robin (bro) says:

This is surely a good time to admit to what our first CDs were – mine was the Right Said Fred album. In my defence, I was about 12 and it was a present (although, I don’t think I was particularly disappointed)

On the other hand, for a certain brother of ours it was Stars by Simply Red. I wonder if his MTV colleagues know this…
