new yorker

There was a copy of the New Yorker magazine lying around the office a couple of days ago, so I had a look at it. Quite impressive stuff I think. I used to subscribe to Rolling Stone, initially for the music stuff, but increasingly for their political journalism. Then (getting old) its music info got kind of dull for me, and the political reporting in Time magazine is frequently so over-sanitized and dull that I’ve been after a decent replacement. As an example, here is a piece where a couple of Washington officials are interviewed about the Iraq situation, and further plans for the area. Very interesting, and either worrying or uplifting depending on your point of view.

Also, a quirk of the magazine which is both pleasing and irritating is the way that they spell compound words with repeated vowels. For example “deĆ«mphasize” and “coƶperate”. I don’t think I’ve seen that anywhere else, and it’s not something that plans to adopt any time soon.
