vacation

We’re really excited right now – we just booked tickets to Calgary, Alberta for my cousin’s wedding in September. We really wanted to go but it was looking very expensive to fly. Plan B was to take a few days each way and road trip it, which would have been about 1300 miles each way – probably a really cool trip to do but maybe not with someone who is 2 1/2.

Anyway I rechecked Northwest’s site on Sunday and it turned out that we had enough worldperks miles to do the whole thing for free (although you still have to pay taxes). We have a nice looking B&B in the middle of town sorted out too, so it’s all set.

great long weekend

A very rare four day weekend just went by and I think we made the most of it. On Friday morning I walked Toby down to school then got back in time to meet with a guy from our utility company about getting air conditioning installed on the house, which I’m very excited about. It’ll be done about a week from now and I’m expecting it to be life-changing. Emma and I went for lunch at a great place in St. Paul where a friend of our works. The weather was perfect and we sat outside for ages, just ideal. Apart from I had to drive so couldn’t drink beer. In the evening we went to see some good friends for dinner. Toby was shy at first but soon got into playing with their dog and having people draw and read for him – I think he really enjoyed it. Unfortunately that night he woke with a high fever of over 103F, so we were all up most of the night, but at least it gave us the excuse to do nothing in particular on Saturday. We did walk round Lake of the Isles in the afternoon, with Toby on his tricycle, but nothing too strenuous.

Sunday we had church, which was a little more eventful than usual due to the fact that there was an area power outage just before the service. So Ray, our conductor, did a sterling job of hammering out the hymns on the piano, and the choir had to deal with singing with the piano at the last minute, and the readers had to read way louder than usual. It did get kind of warm because the air conditioning was out, but it went fine.

Yesterday, Monday, we went to the zoo for most of the Morning where we all had a good time. Toby was very good at petting the goats, and we spoke to a big horse for quite a while. We also saw a cow being milked – Toby of course said that the milk came from the cow’s plumps. We had a good mellow afternoon and I did a lot of grilling for dinner so we have some nice salmon and chicken leftovers. It’s been ages since I’ve had a good t bone steak – the one I did yesterday was sooooo delicious. Unfortunately Toby woke up and woke us up many times last night so we’re not quite on top form today, but I think we’re doing OK.
