Ah, the power of the internet. No matter how insurmountable your problem, there’s always a solution.

Not often I laugh out loud at work, but this very short video did the trick. Picture quality is bad, but that’s hardly the point as you’ll find out.

OK, so it happened on April 29, but it’s really worth watching the video of Stephen Colbert laying into President Bush. Enjoy.

urine gone

Monday, April 17th, 2006

You can hopefully tell that this is going to be an unpleasant story – the squeamish should look away.

Toby had an accident in the car yesterday – after convincing us that he totally didn’t need to go to the bathroom before we left to go to our friends’ house for dinner, it turned out that in fact he did need to go, which he did half-way there. We made the assumption that all we’d need to do would be to change his clothes and wash the cover of his car seat. Well we changed his clothes at the friends’ house, and the plan was to wash the car seat cover today – it didn’t seem that damp so would probably be fine. Emma just called me from home, having taken the cover off the seat, but in the process tipping the seat over, thereby emptying what I’m sure felt like a torrent of day-old pee (which had pooled in the base of Toby’s car seat) on herself and the car’s upholstery. Disaster. Needless to say, she was less than impressed, so I’m going to have to go out to Target tonight to pick up a bottle of aptly named Urine Gone (scroll half-way down this page for details.

When I was in Glasgow I sang at St Mary’s Cathedral, where our conductor occasionally had a somewhat odd turn of phrase in rehearsal. For example:

Tenors, when you come in here I want you to burst. Like an egg

Basses, you’re just tramping around, like a fly on a ceiling

I saw a thing on the TV news this morning about a “crisis” in France due to the rise of obesity in that country. A certain amount from schadenfreude from the American reporter, because a year or two ago the book “French Women Don’t Get Fat” was a big hit, but it turns out that in fact they do. My favorite part of the story, though, was the headline for the section: “Don’t Let Them Eat Cake”.

I’m having a mid-morning snack of some quite tasty veggie chips at the moment. I noticed on the back of the bag the manufacturers’ statement “These are the most delicious snack you’ll ever try”. That’s quite a bold claim in my opinion – is it a guarantee? Is it all downhill from this particular snacking moment? I wonder why they use the verb “try” rather than “eat”?

Paul obviously has a little time on his hands today, at least in 3 minute chunks. This is the second thing from google video he’s sent me today: Matrix Ping Pong, and it’s totally great. Love the background music, too.

My brother Richard called me last night from Las Vegas. He’s visiting for a friend’s wedding, and seemed quite pleased with himself – it’s the first time he’s done a long flight (he doesn’t, or didn’t, like flying which is why he hasn’t come to visit me here yet (I’ve been here in Minneapolis for almost seven years now)). It sounds like he’s been having a great time – enjoying the enormous food, taking note of how different American TV is compared with British, experiencing how friendly people are in stores etc. I told him to stop buying clothes there because they’re cheaper here in Minnesota where there’s no sales tax.

His friends who are getting married are staying in the Bellagio hotel – a few of them went over on Monday night to look at the view. Richard said that it’s pretty incredible, and in his words “a bit like Croydon”. You be the judge:

windows media on mac

Friday, January 13th, 2006

One thing I’ve had slight annoyance with has been trying to play Windows Media format files on Emma’s iBook. I downloaded Windows Media Player 9 for Mac a few days ago, but it didn’t seem to “fit in” to the whole thing the way that QuickTime does. So by coincidence I just saw on MacOSXHints the Flip4Mac plugin for QuickTime, which allows you to play wmv files within QuickTime. It’s a free download and seems to work very well indeed – nice quality playback too.

On another note, this is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in some time.
