Just posted up a bunch of new Toby and Dara photos – here they are. Hope you like them.

Very proud of the kids today, if I may be somewhat boastful. Dara is just being a happy girl in general, and now has about 6 or 7 definite words. It’s continuing to be great to hear her chat come along and get more of an idea of her personality.

And Mr. Toby is doing great at school too. We went to a party for his class yesterday afternoon, and firstly it was so good to see how much fun he was having with all his friends and how much they liked being with him; secondly we heard from his teacher that she had just re-assessed his reading progress. When he started in September he was about level A in reading – levels 1 and 2 are foundation; levels 3, A, B and C are kindergarten level. After a few weeks, one month ago, he was at level C. Levels D through I are first grade level; J onwards is second grade. His assessment yesterday showed that he was at level H. I’m very pleased at how he’s doing – partly to see his progress, but also because he’s just enjoying reading so much. It’s really rewarding that he’ll pick up books and work through them, and is feeling so good about his abilities.

Last weekend, Toby asked Emma if she would knit him a new sweater: “Could you please knit me a rainbow sweater? But with no pink.”

In the car yesterday, Toby was asking why he has to go to school so much. Not totally sure why he would be complaining, because he loves it, to the extent that a few weeks ago he asked if he could live there. But anyway.

Emma’s reasoning for him was was “The President says that you have to go to school so that you can keep learning and get smarter,” to which Toby responded, “Well, the President called me and said that I’m already quite smart, so I don’t have to go to school every day.” Which I think sort of proves his case.

I haven’t posted pictures of the kids in absolutely ages. We have been taking photos, I just haven’t gotten around to posting. Tonight, however, I thought I should just get on with it and posted up the pics I took at dinner time (having a speeeeeeedy new machine certainly helps too). Anyway, here are the photos – enjoy. And here’s a bonus preview:

the best day of all in the world

Ready for kindergarten

Ready for kindergarten

It was Toby’s first day at kindergarten today and he was very excited to be going at last. Last night after he fell asleep and we checked on him, we saw that he had taken his brand new backpack into his bed, so it was clearly something foremost in his mind, even though outwardly he was seeming very calm.

Because his classes don’t start till just after 9:30am, Emma and I took him to the bagel place round the corner for a bit of breakfast, then strolled over in plenty time to get him to his classroom (stopping on the way at the lunchroom so that he could get a banana and we could be sure that he could remember the code number he needed to complete the checkout process). He went in just fine, no worries at all, apart from a big hug he gave us before we left.

When we met him at the end of the day, there were the only tears of the day, because he wanted to stay longer. He’d had a great day, doing lots of writing, some stories, meeting new friends, playing outside (apparently learning to do jump rope was a highlight), and getting his own lunch in the lunchroom, not to mention Spanish class in the afternoon. We’re just really impressed at how well he handled himself. As I was putting him to bed this evening, I asked him if he was looking forward to going again tomorrow, and if he had a good time. He said, “Yes, it was the best day of all in the world.”

last day

Friday, August 29th, 2008

This morning is our last time dropping Toby off at his daycare (apart from a few hours next Wednesday) – the last full day of daycare for him. Yesterday afternoon we went to check out his new kindergarten, met his teacher, prospective friends and our fellow parents, saw the lunchroom etc, and felt really good about the place. However it’s really strange to be sending him in for his last day. I remember very clearly his first day when he was about 8 months old (maybe I don’t remember his exact age at the time…) and how emotional it was, for me at least. Emma seemed to get it out of her system the night before, and Toby was happy to sit with the other kids and steal toys from them. I, on the other hand, blubbed like a big girl. And this morning I’ve got that strange feeling where things are changing and he’s growing up really fast and is he going to be OK in his new school. Of course he is – he’s very competent and self-aware, but you’d be a different parent than me if you didn’t feel something at this kind of thing.

quick update

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Sorry, not ignoring you – just busy busy and busy and I keep forgetting to post updates.

So here, very quickly, is how things are standing. Busy at work – all excellent, but just a lot to do. Really enjoying it though.

Toby and Dara are doing great. Dara is now 11 months, and doing loads. She loves playing with her big brother and he’s great with her. She’s doing a lot of standing, not quite ready for walking yet although she’s taken a couple of steps a few times. She seems to be pretty happy zooming around crawling, so who knows how long it’ll take. She’s still very chatty – all sounding very meaningful and important but mostly incomprehensible, in a very charming way. She’s starting to be able to do a few words though – ball and bear are quite definite, and last night she said her name very clearly a few times when she saw herself in the mirror. Toby is still “babaa”.

Toby himself is doing very well too. He’s just started his last week of daycare, in preparation for starting kindergarten next week. He’s extremely excited, we’ll see how he handles the anticipation and a bit of nervousness. He’s still zooming around – swimming really well and also a master of Wii tennis. He has lots of plans and schemes floating around in his head, and now that he’s getting older he doesn’t have so many amusing verbal mistakes, although yesterday he was telling us how to get somewhere and he said “first you need to find a case of stairs”.

We probably won’t need these for Dara – she seems to have a fair bit more hair than Toby did at her age. Even at 17 months old he was fairly bald, which lead us to take matters into our own hands:

Toby with wig That’s actually fur from our cat, but I don’t think Toby was impressed.

Now, however someone has come up with a solution: baby toupees:
