I saw this on BoingBoing today – a train set for kids, with dripping blood and a demon head!

This just in: housework can reduce the risk of breast cancer. Ladies, take note. Also take note: I’m just reporting here.

Last night we went with our neighbors to the British TV Advertising Awards at the Walker Art Center, which they show every year. This year’s crop were pretty cool – some amazing effects in a number of them, and a lot of humor mixed with quite hard-hitting public service ads.

Unlike previous years there was a much more international theme – a lot set in France or the USA for example, rather than being very British in feel. Honda had some great ones, including one where a choir “sings” the sounds in and around a car for a day – the rain, road surface, CD playing etc. Also the mobile phone companies seemed to be trying to outdo each other on the feelgood factor, the sweetest one being a couple who ballet dance through their house, through the garden and then into the street where they walk off holding hands – the idea being that relationships get stronger over time.

My personal favorite was for Guinness- fantastic.

At this time of the year one of our local radio stations plays nothing but Christmas music (interspersed with commercials). It drives me completely insane but Emma loves it. One of the songs in high rotation is “The Little Drummer Boy” by the bizarre combination of Bing Crosby and David Bowie. Today there’s an interesting feature in the Washington Post on how such an unlikely recording was made.

From my friend Robin – this apparently is where my family comes from – the Mogendorff factory.

This story is just too good not to mention. I wonder if Samuel L. Jackson is aware?

Because I thought it would merge two of her favorite things, I forwarded something to Emma (from boingboing) yesterday – knitted woolly cupcakes. Em was unimpressed though – she said she’d much prefer cake that looks like knitting.

On our block someone has put some graffiti on the stop signs. So now instead of just saying Stop they say “Stop War”, “Stop Hate”, and “Stop driving”. All well and good but to be honest, all a bit sincere and humorless, unlike this:

Although gmail’s spam filter is pretty good I still get the odd spam message through to my regular inbox. This afternoon a great sender name: Forages E. Politburo.

I saw this morning that google are now doing custom search boxes to add to sites, so I have tried installing a Google Co-op box on the left on this page. It seems to work so far, let me know what you think.

UPDATE: This has now gone since I moved to WordPress – let me know if the default search isn’t meeting your needs
