this american life tv

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

For years I’ve been listening to This American Life on our local public radio station. The show is also available now via podcast – it’s an engrossing hour of quirky stories about, well, life in America.

I had heard that they’ve started doing a TV show on Showtime, which unfortunately we don’t get on our cable package – fortunately they have the first show online – I recommend it.

UPDATE: corrected the podcast link. Hopefully it works outside the US too.

google bomb

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

You may be familiar with the term “google bomb” – it’s basically where people manipulate the ranking of certain web pages by linking to words on that page, thereby making it more likely that a Google search will return that page. Examples in the past meant that googling “liar” would return links to pages about Tony Blair.

And here’s one from today – a search for “failure” (click picture for a clearer view):

Here’s a spooky Dick Cheney picture – with captions! (warning – some rude words contained in the link). (But it’s still funny).

caption competition

Congratulations to my brother for winning today’s BBC caption competition. I think all the entries are pretty decent, but his pips them. Nice job, Robin!

you decide

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

I got an email from our choir director asking whether I’d need childcare for Toby during the upcoming Holy Week services, specifically for our wonderful Tenebrae service on the fourth.

This was sent to my gmail account which you may know has targeted ads shown discreetly on the right of the screen, based on the text in the message you might be reading.

So how, I wonder, did they decide to include this ad:

Ever Do A Colon Cleanse?
What is known. What is unknown. Real cleansing photos. You decide.
blessedherbs.com/colon-cleansing

I have decided, and I do not want to see real cleansing photos.

links

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

I got a note from Amazon.com today saying that they’re rolling out a beta service to Amazon Associates, which should automatically detect web page content and build a quick link to their site. So you might see some new links – I think that if you hover your mouse pointer over the links it’ll show a small pop-up window describing what they’re going to try to sell to you.

the power of cheese

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

I’ve got to get me some of this: world’s smelliest cheese. I like that it’s even smellier than one which is banned from being taken on public transport in France.

There’s one I’ve bought from a store here which I need to wrap in two ziplocs and a box to stop it from stinking up the fridge, and Emma can tell from the living room when I open the box in the kitchen. Delicious.

forcey

Just found this great video on pharyngula – UK comedian Robin Ince describes fairly succinctly the history of creationist “thought” – it’s worth watching if you enjoy an exhasperating laugh:

a nice stuffing

Friday, March 16th, 2007

OK so it’s a bit rude but this made me laugh this morning, sent by my sister in law with the email subject “Need stuffing?”: a local business in Texas

happy pi day

Today is Pi Day (because Pi 3.14… looks A BIT like the American for March 14 – 3/14) so go ahead and eat pie to celebrate. And: read this dinosaur comic for more information and an alternative Pi Day.
