reproduction news

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

It’s been a busy week this week for our friends and their new offspring. At the weekend we happened to see our neighbors G and J depart for the hospital to have a baby girl. Hopefully a fun little friend for Dara, and right across the road.

Last night we heard news that our friends M and C were off to hospital too to have their baby. They had a wee boy this morning and all are doing well. They live only a couple of blocks away so Dara will also have the chance for a boy to play with.

As for Miss Dara herself, she turned 6 months old last week and remains a very happy little person. She has pretty much mastered sitting up unaided which means she’s able to do much more interesting things like play musical instruments with Toby (pics to follow when I have time). Next step I think is getting mobile – she is already beginning to start to try to reach beyond her immediate radius and is paying a lot of attention to the kids at Daycare who are crawling. She moves up to the Infant II class on Monday so I am expecting her to be on the move soon. Look out world, or at least Toby’s toys.

new toby and dara photos

Finally got a quiet few minutes to get some new Toby and Dara pics – here they are. We need to take more though. You’ll note that there aren’t many of Dara smiling. She’s actually a very smiley little person, but when the camera does its pre-flash thing she gets all confused and starts frowning. We’ll see if we can work around this. Last night we were out at some friends’ for dinner, and to celebrate Emma’s birthday, and Dara spent a lot of time sitting up by herself. She needed someone to be behind her in case she forgot to balance, but I think that within a week she’ll have it down.

five months

(Warning: extremely biased reporting to follow – I think I’m justified though)

Dara is five months old today, and doing just great so far. She’s growing well, and seems healthy and very happy. She’s continuing to be very alert and interested in her surroundings – even when she was just a few days old she didn’t like to lean on to my shoulder when I was holding her, preferring instead to try to lift her head and pushing on me with her little arms. Since then she’s decided she doesn’t like to be reclined when she has a bottle – she insists on sitting bold upright so that she can see everything that’s going on with her wide open, blue eyes. Lately she’s been getting even more engaged in her house-mates – she still seems to think that Toby is the most fantastic resident of the house, and squeals with delight when she sees him, but she’s also taken a recent and strong interest in the cats. She loves to watch them as they go about their offices, with the consequence that if one is running around while she’s having a bottle she doesn’t get much eating done because she keeps needing to turn her head to watch the action. They’re being really good with her, and let her feel their fur with a certain amount of grimness, but patience too.

The biggest development with her is just in the last few days, which is that she realized on Thursday that by moving her mouth at the same time as making sounds, she could make brand new, much more interesting sounds. So almost constantly while she’s awake we’ve had a little voice going “Aaraaadaada aadoiyaaadaaaghhhaaararoh” etc, with occasional ear-splitting squeals of happiness. She’s quite content to lie on her back singing at her toes, or sit singing to her bottle for ages at a time. Feeding her, therefore, is not a quick operation – last night she was getting cereal and spent longer singing to her spoon than using it to eat.

Just doing some geekery – trying to get the PC upstairs to work (Windows keeps freezing and I have no idea why – at the moment it’s almost completely unusable, and even re-installing doesn’t seem to be working); upgrading WordPress for this blog to keep it clean and fresh; and posting up pics of Toby and Dara. Here are the pictures – enjoy!

Finally, pictures of our Bermuda trip. It’s been so cold in Minneapolis I haven’t been able to stop shivering for long enough to be able to type, let alone use iPhoto. Anyway, I think the pics came out pretty well – here they are

dara update

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Haven’t written anything about Dara for a little while. She’s doing really well – generally she’s a really happy little person and we’re really enjoying that she’s more sociable every day, not to mention that for the last few weeks she’s been sleeping about 8 hours a night which is amazing. We’ll see how long that lasts.

Today was a big day for her. She had her three-week-belated two month checkup, which involved being measured (23 inches now) and weighed (11 pounds 1 ounce, up from 7 pounds 1 ounce at birth) and jabbed with needles for a few vaccinations. Dr. Williams seemed very pleased with how she’s doing and she was very well behaved with him.

After that we dropped her off at daycare for her first day, as Emma’s doing a couple of weeks of part time. We met with the teacher, Theresa, who has been working there for years and seems wonderful, and got all the bits and pieces sorted out – diapers, clothes, milk etc – and saw the other little babies who might be Dara’s friends over the coming years. Apparently Toby went through to see her after he’d had his lunch to make sure she was OK – what a good big brother. When we picked her up she seemed very happy in the room, but also (I imagine) was excited to see me and be picked up. Now that she’s so much more sociable and aware I think she probably will have enjoyed looking around and watching all the people, so I’m sure it was a good thing for her.

Both Toby and Dara got dressed up for Hallowe’en today. Toby was a Jedi – of course Toby Wan Kenobi. For Dara, Emma got (and slightly altered) a Princess Leia outfit. Here are some pics, for your enjoyment (click on a picture to embiggen):

dara’s first smiles

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Emma took some great pictures last week of Dara smiling. The smiles don’t happen often, but Emma got some nice shots I think. The pics are here.

Incidentally Dara is currently on the sofa with Emma – Dara is nursing and parping gently.
