boiling mad

Friday, October 22nd, 2004

From time to time, Fafblog loses its perky quirky tone and gets really mad about things. Yesterday they got upset about this and this, and I think you should be too.

In home news we realised that the toy Nessie and Scout were playing with last night was in fact a live mouse. We impounded the cats in the kitchen and tried to rescue it but, not knowing that we were trying to help, it ran away so we had to release the cats and let nature run its cruel but majestic course. This being, of course, why we employed them in the first place. This morning there is no sign of mouse apart from a couple of ominous blood smears on the kitchen floor. The cats are busy telling us how cuddly and lovely they are. It’s a little strange.

she’s back

Emma got back safe and sound yesterday, much earlier than we expected which was great. Toby seemed quite happy to see her, but was kind of low-key about it. But he was very happy to see her this morning so I think we’re all friends again.

I showed Em last night one of the things he’s just learned to do. He has a toy farm set with lots of animals (he’s good at animal names and noises) and over the weekend he started holding each animal over the toy feeding trough and making eating noises. Interesting to see him playing like this, I think it shows that something in his brain has linked up and he’s able to know that animals eat, and these toy animals need to eat too.

away

Emma’s away this weekend, in Minot, North Dakota for the wedding of a friend from work. She and three of her friends are driving all the way out there, they stopped in Fargo last night. Toby and I are doing fairly well, although he’s been asking for her at least once an hour and seemed unnerved not to see her this morning, and it is a little strange. But we’re doing fine on the whole – we did some playing and went to Target this morning, and so far no problems.

quote of the debate

Thursday, October 14th, 2004

Most bizarre exchange from the debate last night (from Washington Post):

KERRY: Well, two leading national news networks have both said the president’s characterization of my health-care plan is incorrect. One called it fiction. The other called it untrue.

SCHIEFFER (moderator): Mr. President?

BUSH: In all due respect, I’m not so sure it’s credible to quote leading news organizations about — oh, nevermind. Anyway, let me quote the Lewin report. The Lewin report is a group of folks who are not politically affiliated. They analyzed the senator’s plan.

dodgy math

Or maybe dodgy stats, or just dodgy reporting. I just wrote to the BBC, because in their coverage of last night’s presidential debate they said in the second paragraph that “neither was seen as an outright winner”. However further down on the very same page a CNN poll shows that approx 52% of people polled thought that Kerry won, and 38% thought Bush won. Hmmm, seems like someone won to me – I wonder why they said that was not the case?

Here is more than you probably wanted to know about the great city of Minneapolis. Kind of interesting. One glaring mistake I noticed is that they include the city website for
